AUGUST TANG Nonbinary Gender

Nonbinary gender describes any gender identity that is not exclusively male or exclusively female. Gender is a spectrum or an array, not just two checkboxes on a questionnaire. The diversity and complexity of the human experience cannot be accurately described by a binary of male and female. This concept isn’t radical—throughout all of history, different cultures across the globe transcended the two gender model. In the United States, nonbinary gender is becoming more visible, creating the space and dialogue for a variety of different gender identities. It is our individual responsibility to expand our understanding of gender and commit to inclusivity of people who are nonbinary and transgender.
