Alyssa Herrera is a designer living in Phoenix who works as a Creative Lead for ASU. At a young age, she discovered her passions for graphic and web design through the internet’s diverse creative landscape. Since then, she has balanced her studies and various design roles while forging a path towards UI/UX design. After graduation, she hopes to adopt some cats and live in a colder state.
Inaccessible design and architecture negatively impact millions of people, particularly those facing severe disabilities or chronic conditions, as they are commonly unable to access different services, activities, and transportation methods. This also contributes to a decline in mental health, with around 40% of adults in such circumstances reporting feelings of social isolation.
To create more inclusive and supportive spaces, it is crucial to prioritize fixing inaccessible designs by supporting advocates, reporting to code officials, and spreading awareness. By promoting universal accessibility, we can break the cycle of exclusion, fostering a sense of community and connection for everyone. This effort not only would improve individual well-being, but contribute to building a more equitable society.
