Caylie is a 25 year old Senior from Minnesota, attending ASU for Graphic Design. Growing up she was surrounded by design, and the idea of pursuing it as a future career was always there. As a child, she spent time cutting out vinyl in her dad's shop, and now, as one of his production artists, experiencing this full circle journey is incredibly rewarding for them. They hope to travel the world, and design for the music industry, or a dispensary focussed design firm.
African Americans face a fourfold higher arrest rate than white Americans despite similar marijuana consumption rates. Marijuana has been a key driver of mass criminalization in this country. The majority of people arrested, out of the hundreds of thousands of people, are from Black or Latino communities.
The perpetuating racial bias against people of color and minority communities needs to end. Law enforcement practices need to be reformed to eliminate racial profiling and bias in marijuana related arrests and prosecutions. Communities impacted by the war on drugs need to be reinvested in. Everyone, regardless of their minority status, needs an equal opportunity to succeed in life as individuals in non-minority communities.
