Reframing the Conversation

Words spoken in everyday conversations carry more weight than you might think. Though similar in meaning, the terms “trauma victim” and “trauma survivor” carry vastly different connotations. Language surrounding mental health can act as a barrier to treatment by reinforcing negative stereotypes and perpetuating shame around seeking help. People begin to self-stigmatize, fearing judgment or discrimination. Even terms influenced by media and culture, such as “crazy” or “psycho,” contribute to societal stigma, normalize harmful attitudes, discourage open conversations, and perpetuate isolation for those facing mental health challenges. Struggling with mental health shouldn’t be a defining character flaw. By promoting empowering, person-first language, we can encourage open conversations and create a more supportive, inclusive environment for mental health.
