Racial Disparities in Swimming Education and Access

Drowning rates among Black individuals are significantly higher than their white peers, an alarming disparity rooted in systemic racism. This disparity is upheld by a lack of public funding, generational skill gaps, and racism in the competitive field. To address this public health crisis, we must address swimming comfort and skills for both parents and their children, and support programs that foster opportunities, promote inclusivity, and nurture talent in underrepresented communities. It is also essential that we view public pools as an essential service for municipal residents – as population numbers and temperatures both continue to rise.
