Doctor assisted euthanasia, also known as physician-assisted suicide, refers to the process in which a physician provides medical assistance to a terminally ill patient to end their life. The patient must request the procedure and have a diagnosis of a terminal illness with a limited life expectancy. The physician may prescribe medication to the patient to induce death, but the patient must ultimately self-administer the medication. Doctor assisted euthanasia is a controversial issue and is currently only legal in a few countries and states within the United States.
