Deepfakes are synthetic images, videos, or audios created using AI technology to make a person appear to do or say something they never have. In 2017, the first “deepfake” was uploaded to social media platform Reddit. This first deepfake was of a pornographic nature of a female celebrity. Since then, in 2023 there was a 550% increase in the number of deepfakes uploaded to the web. Nearly all deepfakes created are pornographic, mainly targeting unconsenting women.
