Shaye Tompsett

Shaye Tompsett was born and raised in Southwest Michigan and she has been drawing since she was old enough to hold a pencil. Her family has been extremely supportive and she began officially studying Design for Digital Media during her junior year of high school. Following her high school graduation and an enlistment in the United States Navy, Shaye moved to Mesa, Arizona and attended Mesa Community College, studying Fine Arts directly under the Art Department Director and several other highly accomplished professors. Shaye has since transferred to Arizona State University and is excited to receive a Bachelor of Science in Design with a concentration on Graphic Design and Visual Communication in May, 2024.
Book banning violates the First Amendment, which safeguards freedom of speech and expression. It suppresses diverse perspectives, inhibits critical thinking, and undermines democracy. Specifically, targeting LGBTQ+ and Black literature perpetuates discrimination by censoring narratives that represent these communities' experiences, struggles, and triumphs.
By restricting access to these stories, book banning further marginalizes already marginalized groups, hindering their representation and perpetuating ignorance and intolerance. It curtails the right to information, hindering education and fostering a climate of exclusion. Ultimately, it denies individuals the opportunity to explore different viewpoints, hindering societal progress and inclusivity. Upholding the Constitution means protecting the freedom to access diverse literature that reflects the rich tapestry of human experiences.
