Degrees of Debt
Education
Higher education is marketed as a path to opportunity, yet around half of bachelor’s degree graduates leave with debt. The amount borrowed shapes early adulthood by influencing how quickly stability, savings, and major life milestones can be reached. Degrees of Debt centers on a participatory installation where viewers place clothespins to represent their own debt on a growing scale, revealing its collective weight over time. As contributions accumulate throughout the exhibition, the piece visualizes how common and varied debt experiences are.
A companion website extends this exploration through three case studies, allowing viewers to compare how different financial starting points, including choosing not to attend college, shape access, stability, and long term mobility.
