Gold has been part of traditions and celebrations worldwide. Although the gold rush ended around 1855, a new wave of mining is emerging. The Amazon Rainforest; one of the world’s most important centers of biodiversity and home to many Indigenous tribes, is increasingly targeted by both legal and illegal gold mining due to economic pressures and weak enforcement of environmental protections.
