Human Rights
“Innocent until proven guilty” is a foundational principle of the American justice system, yet it does not always reflect lived reality. According to the National Registry of Exonerations, more than 3,000 people in the United States have been officially exonerated, many after losing years or even decades to imprisonment. On average, an exoneree spends over 11 years incarcerated before being cleared. These cases often involve inadequate legal representation, racial bias, unreliable forensic evidence, or procedural barriers that delay appeals. While the justice system is designed to ensure fairness, wrongful convictions reveal the need for continued accountability, transparency, and reform to better protect the innocent.
