The Effects of Microplastics on the Human Body

Microplastic consumption has become an increasing issue due to our dependency on plastic materials. With plastic production increasing drastically each passing year, microplastics have made their way into essential ecosystems which we depend on, posing hazards to human health. The intake of microplastic particles causes many adverse health effects including DNA damage, changes in gene activity, oxidative damage, neurodevelopmental disorders, neurotoxicity, as well as various endocrine disorders. On average we consume up to 5 grams of plastic per week, which can remain in the body for several years. Once microplastics enter our system, it is extremely difficult for them to be removed. Because of this it is crucial that we limit our use of plastic items as much as possible.
