Gender Bias in Clinical Research

Historically, male bodies have been used as the medical standard in both clinical research and healthcare, resulting in a significant lack of clinical studies including women or focused on the female body. This includes a medical gap and insufficient research on things such as the way symptoms present differently between male and female bodies, the unique impact of medical treatments and medications on males/females and how the female body responds differently to these treatments, and a lack of funding for research on female specific health conditions.  As a result, women face challenges such as delayed diagnosis, misdiagnosis, ineffective treatments, unintentional male-centric medical training and overall poorer outcomes for women’s healthcare.
